Cambodia - Section 2

How do I get to Cambodia?

AIR:

Cambodia has two international airports - Phnom Penh (PNH) and Siem Reap (REP), which is the gateway to Angkor Wat. These two airports can be accessed via most South-East Asian gateways such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Currently Cambodia does not have a national airline. The last national carrier, Royal Air Cambodge, folded in 2001. There are plans for a new national airline to begin services in the future.

Low cost carriers

Low cost carrier Jetstar Asia operates flights to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap via Singapore from Cairns, Darwin and Melbourne airports. Air Asia operates flights to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh via Kuala Lumpur from Gold Coast, Perth and Melbourne airports.

From New Zealand a connecting flight to Australia would be the best option to connect to a low cost carrier.

Remember you can charge a booking fee when selling a low cost carrier.

Departure Tax

International departure tax for adults is USD25 per person for international flights from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap and USD6 for domestic flights. This is a local tax paid at the airport upon departure.

RAIL:

The closest you’ll get to Cambodia by rail is by taking the train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet (a small town on the Thai side of the border about 6 km away from the crossing into Cambodia at Poipet). The train takes around 6 hours and there are two services daily. Most people would opt for the bus from Bangkok to the border as its quicker (around 4 ½ hours) and more comfortable.

ROAD:

Cambodia shares border crossings with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

The two most commonly used land crossings are Bangkok to Siem Reap which takes around 9 – 12 hours and Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh which takes around 6 hours.

For people wanting more information on land crossings refer them to a travel guide such as Lonely Planet or similar.

TOURS:

Many of the adventure travel companies offer multi country tours that include Cambodia along with its neighbouring countries. Group sizes are small (usually around 12 – 18 people maximum) giving you the opportunity to visit areas off the beaten track without the hassle and worry of arranging your own transport, accommodation and sightseeing. Generally the tour guides are born and bred in the areas visited, so have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
